Jesus says GO

Julia Cameron reviews Robin Wells' book about getting involved in global mission

Jesus says go book coverJESUS SAYS GO is an unusual book. It is for anyone exploring cross-cultural mission, short-term or long-term. I don’t know of any other book which serves this dual purpose, and this book serves it well.

It is, in short, a book about sacrifice. Short-termers who read it will be able to ask a new set of questions about their own longer-term plans as a result. For any reader, you will gain new insights into the kinds of things cross-cultural workers need to process. The book comes in three parts:

PART 1

Each chapter contains one or more stories to illustrate principles. The chapters look at what it’s like to enter another culture, to live and serve under national leadership, to face failure, to reassess career prospects. There are also sections on singleness and marriage; housing; children’s education.

PART 2

This is called the ‘Interlude’ section. Here we find a wealth of high-quality brief contributions which are tailor-made for short-termers: John Stott on ‘The missionary Trinity’; Paul Borthwick on ‘How to keep your mission vision alive’; a very honest piece from ‘Helen’ who was converted as a student and is serving in one of the last remaining Communist countries in the world, though her family didn’t understand her and even her Christian friends didn’t understand her. Ann McClean (OMF) writes on how short-termers can be used to build the long-term ministry in that town or city.

PART 3

The third section is from Rose Dowsett, as compelling a writer as she is a speaker. ‘From Eden to Eternity’ takes us on a high-speed tour from Genesis to Revelation, showing how mission is in the heart and the character of God himself, for he is a missionary God.

The last word

The last word, as the Foreword, goes to George Verwer. He writes: ‘God has put it on my heart to say that this is a great book… God is calling us all to be a part of his mission. Don’t waste your life.’

Appendices

The book concludes with lists of websites for training colleges, and for evangelical mission agencies.

What people say

‘This book has all the potential of becoming a classic.’

EMQ Magazine

‘It calls us to account for compromise with prevailing culture, and keeps us positive and excited about the potential of being used by God.’

I found this book incredibly helpful. It looks at mission realistically yet with a heart of passion. It covers some big issues and helps ordinary Christians in churches to consider mission without rose-coloured spectacles on. Very challenging! I can't recommend it highly enough.
