Being the Best Scotland 2010

A continuous professional development programme for those representing mission in churches in Scotland

Helping those representing mission

Being the Best is a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) programme that has been run succesfully in England throughout 2008 and 2009 and will be run in Scotland in 2010 over one year. The course is for all those who represent mission in the churches of Scotland, and is being co-ordinated by Mission Representatives Fellowship Scotland who meet throughout the year to provide sharing, encouragement, prayer support and undertake joint activities together. Visit our website www.mrf.org.uk or contact us using the link at the bottom of this page for further information.

The desperate need!

The stereotype of the missionary in the pith helmet, civilising the heathen of Africa, may have long since disappeared from the average, evangelical church in the UK. There is no doubt that audio and DVD presentation by mission agencies have improved tremendously in recent years and many are now of a high standard.

However, the individuals sent round to do ‘deputation’ have too often been a disaster. The experience of trying to avoid or having to survive a sad, outdated, unimaginative mission presentation is still dreaded by many Christians. ‘Boring’ is the word that immediately springs to mind for so many. Maybe you know of church leaders who are angry about the standard of presentations to which their congregations have been subjected. We need presenters who are trained to communicate their passion for mission in a dynamic way to a twenty first century audience.

A considerable improvement is needed in two areas:

  • Firstly, we need to improve the quality of mission presentations
  • Secondly, and probably more importantly, we need to restore confidence by Christians and church leaders in mission presentations

If we don’t redeem the reputation of mission presentations, church members will never hear of all that God is doing in his world and the many opportunities for them to be involved.

Providing confidence for churches

We want the Being the Best programme to be recognised by and to serve UK churches. Hopefully, there will be a growing confidence in churches to invite those who have participated in the course.

The details

In Scotland Being the Best 2010 will consist of three training sessions in one centre over a period of one year. Individuals may book but we expect many agency representatives to be required by their agency to attend the course. For those who are booked we require the name and contact details of their line manager or responsible senior person, so that comments and suggestions can be passed back.

Trainer

The experienced trainer for the CPD programme is Brian Boley. Brian has been involved in training in church, mission and other Christian contexts. More information about Brian and his training experience is available on www.christiantraining.org.uk
