Georgian Conflict Appeal
The crisis in Georgia has filled our TV screens for days. The shelling of civilian areas has been widespread. There has been much killing, rape and looting away from the eyes of the cameras. There have been atrocities on both sides. Many old scores have been settled and new ones kindled for the future.
The ceasefire is now spreading and troops withdrawing. However, over 100,000 people have been driven from their homes and are terrified, traumatised and anxious for lost loved ones, and are without food, clothing, homes, jobs.
Georgia is an ancient and proud country. It was the second country in history (after Armenia) to embrace Christianity as the State religion. Since the break-up of the Soviet Union, Georgia has been seeking closer ties with the West, aspiring to join the EU and NATO. Now, many Georgians feel betrayed and abandoned.
WorldShare is working with the Tblisi Pentecostal Church, which has a multi-ethnic congregation of over 1000. The close fellowship of these believers – from Georgian, Ossetian, Russian and Armenian backgrounds – is a living example in this divided country of how God can change lives.
Worldshare are helping TPC to assist the refugees in Tblisi, Gori and elsewhere. Help will also be sent to those who fled north into North Ossetia. Help will be given irrespective of nationality or religious background.
TPC is providing each refugee with a package containing, foods, shoes, towels, blankets, food etc. In time TPC will move on to help in the re-establishment of homes, communities and livelihoods. But the need now is for immediate help for the homeless. The generous giving of this help is a testimony to the love of Christ, and at the same time, church members can minister to the bereaved, fearful and desperate.
A package of aid for one refugee costs £40. If you would like to give to the Worldshare Georgian Conflict Appeal click here to visit their website.
